Jolene O'Hanlon's brave campaign
Belfast coroner Paddy McGurgan was fully entitled to pay tribute to the courage displayed by Jolene O'Hanlon in speaking out to highlight the dangers involved in newborn babies sleeping with their parents.
Ms O'Hanlon gave poignant evidence to an inquest into the sudden death of her two-month-old son, Declan, 15 months ago, and is determined to raise awareness in an attempt to prevent similar tragedies which often involve exhausted adults trying to cope with their unsettled children.
As we report today, the SDLP deputy leader Nichola Mallon, who gave birth to her third child less than a month ago, has given strong support to Ms O'Hanlon's campaign.
With an estimated 25 deaths which may be connected to co-sleeping taking place across Northern Ireland every year, it is essential that families are provided with as much information as possible about the issue.
