Deep regret over Tyrone road tragedy

There will be deep concern over reports that the weekend traffic accident in Co Tyrone which left two people dead and three others needing hospital treatment happened at a corner which had been the scene of a number of previous collisions.

It was particularly poignant that both of those who were fatally injured on the busy route between Moy and Dungannon were originally from Slovakia, and were believed to have moved from central Europe to Ireland for employment reasons.

We have come through another tragic period on our roads, with the funerals of the four young men who were killed when their vehicle crashed near Gweedore in Co Donegal only taking place last Thursday.

It is essential that the authorities give urgent consideration to any safety measures which are capable of reducing the threat to the public at known accident blackspots.
