A dark day as two men die in the Mournes
There has been a deep sense of shock and sadness following the deaths of two men in the Mourne Mountains on Sunday.
Warm tributes have been paid to the victims, Sean Byrne from Camlough and former RUC chief superintendent Robbie Robinson, who fell to their deaths in separate accidents at Wee Binnian and Slieve Commedagh.
It is frightening to think that what should have been a pleasant day out ended in absolute tragedy.
While the weather this month has been unusually mild, conditions in the Mournes were said to be treacherous with strong winds and slippery surfaces causing problems for walkers.
The Mourne Mountain Rescue team, the PSNI and other emergency services must be commended for their efforts on Sunday, which also involved rescuing two walkers who had been injured.
This was indeed a dark day in a place of great beauty. The thoughts of the entire community will be with the families and friends of the two men who lost their lives.
