Deep concern over alcohol related deaths

The new figures showing that deaths due to alcohol abuse across Northern Ireland have jumped by 40 per cent in a period of less than two decades are hugely alarming.

There will be particular concern over the high level of fatalities among people in the 60-64 age group and the clear indications that woman of all generations are increasingly vulnerable to drink-related problems.

It is clear that, as we reported yesterday, some individuals use alcohol to cope with pressures which may include loneliness, isolation and the impact of retirement.

However, campaigners have also stressed how related difficulties can be successfully addressed at any stage in life and it is always important to highlight the support and advice which is readily available.
