Fitting UNESCO recognition for hurling and camogie

Hurling and camogie are not only justifiably regarded as among the oldest and fastest field sports in the world but are also arguably the most thrilling of them all.

It is entirely appropriate that they were yesterday officially named as protected cultural activities by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, alongside Indian yoga and reggae music from Jamaica.

The UNESCO recognition effectively places Gaelic games on the world stage but only confirms what was already known by enthusiasts in all parts of Ireland.
