Important to highlight the community spirit of GAA

CONTROVERSIES over fighting on and off pitches during several GAA games over the past month or so have unfairly put the whole organisation in a very bad light.

Yes the instances of mass brawls, sometimes involving spectators and players, were unacceptable and it is entirely appropriate that they are subject to the strongest disciplinary response from county boards.

However the majority of GAA games are played in the proper sporting spirit. There are also very strong bonds connecting the whole of the organisation.

One such connection was illustrated at the weekend by the holding of fund-raising games to help Co Monaghan club Magheracloone whose pitch and clubhouse has been seriously damaged by the appearance of sink-holes.

Thousands of Euros were raised by the charity games and other initiatives. This rallying around to help a club in need is what the majority of GAA clubs and members are truly about and it is important that it should recognised.
