Action needed over Aughnacloy spillage

The cause of the shocking incident in which a foul-smelling waste product was extensively sprayed across the main street of Aughnacloy in Co Tyrone was still under investigation last night but there can be no doubt that the consequences were wide-ranging

Witnesses said that the material, which was described as more pungent than slurry, was a foot deep in parts of the border village yesterday morning, causing health fears for residents and forcing the closure of some businesses.

Initial reports suggested that the spillage involved whey, a milk solid used in the Agri-food industry, and a major clean-up operation was required throughout the rest of the day.

It is essential that the full sequence of events is established without delay and there will be a firm expectation that a prosecution should also follow swiftly.
