Huge sorrow over Greek honeymoon death

There will be enormous regret over the death of Dublin man Brian O'Callaghan-Westropp, who had not been seen since he was separated from his wife as they tried to escape from wildfires which have devastated large areas of mainland Greece.

Mr O'Callaghan-Westropp was caught up in the disaster while on honeymoon earlier this week in the coastal town of Mati with his new bride, Zoe Holohan, who is being treated in hospital after suffering burns to her head and hands.

A heat wave followed by strong winds allowed a series of outbreaks to spread with terrifying speed across villages and holiday resorts, and the official death toll is already is excess of 70.

The emergency services are carrying out a massive operation in the region and it must be hoped that the search for the other missing people produces positive results.
