Time for clarity from Michael D Higgins
There has been some surprise that President Michael D Higgins has yet to confirm whether he is prepared to seek re-election for another seven years this Autumn.
Mr Higgins said during his successful campaign for the post in 2010 that he would only be a one-term head of state but there have been clear indications for a considerable period that he has changed his mind.
He finally indicated during an official visit to Lithuania yesterday that he would clarify his intentions early next month, and it is certainly time that the matter was finally resolved.
Mr Higgins has been a widely respected president but in all the circumstances a definitive announcement about his plans is overdue.
