Alarm over Lurgan funeral violence

The level of violence which broke out during at a burial at St Colman's Cemetery in Lurgan could only be regarded as highly disturbing.

Prolonged fighting followed a Traveller funeral in the town on Monday, with a range of weapons reportedly produced, and three people needing hospital treatment for stab wounds after a air ambulance and a team of paramedics were sent to the scene.

What was particularly alarming was that it all took place despite attempts in advance by police to work with all those involved and ensure that the proceedings passed off without incident.

There can be no doubt that the confrontations would be unacceptable in any section of the community, and there will be an expectation that the perpetrators will be dealt with firmly by the courts.
