Fears for Tory Island community

The population of Ireland's offshore islands has fallen steadily in the modern era, but for a number of reasons, primarily the determination of the residents, the rate of decline has eased in recent years.

It is therefore disappointing that several families are threatening to move from Tory Island, off the Donegal coast, because of fears that a replacement ferry, which is due to maintain the vital link with the mainland, is not up to standard for the daunting nine-mile crossing.

There will certainly be surprise that the chosen vessel is 40 years old while its predecessor was deemed to be no longer fit for purpose although it was only built 25 years ago.

It is essential that Irish government officials review the decision, and ensure that the views of everyone associated with our island communities are taken fully into account.
