Alarm over west Belfast street brawl

There can only be considerable concern over the video footage which has emerged of a mass brawl in west Belfast involving dozens of young people armed with a range of weapons in broad daylight.

As we reported yesterday, the confrontation is believed to have taken place in the Grosvenor Road area on Sunday afternoon and may have been the result of a feud between two families.

Baseball bats and golf clubs were wielded over a period of several minutes, with at least one individual apparently holding a knife, and it was fortunate that no serious injuries were caused as a result.

It is essential that disputes of this kind are referred to either community representatives or ultimately the police long before violence which could have grave consequences spills on to our streets.
