Derry Girls creates new stars despite the swearing

The much anticipated new Channel 4 comedy Derry Girls, chronicling the adventures of a lively group of teenagers in the city during the height of the Troubles, was never likely to be a dull affair.

Everyone associated with the show is entitled to be delighted over the impact it has made on both sides of the Irish Sea and the hugely positive reviews which have followed.

While allowing for artistic licence, and the fact that the programme was clearly aimed at a late night adult audience, many parents and teachers will still be concerned at the relentless level of casual swearing depicted among pupils in a fictional school.

However, the compelling performances by several previously unknown actors in a notoriously challenging genre means that Derry Girls may well have created a new generation of young stars.
