Mary Evans worked tirelessly for The Disappeared

Mary Evans, who was buried in Crossmaglen yesterday after her death at the age of 85, was a tireless campaigner on behalf of all of those associated with the group known as The Disappeared.

Her own son, Gerry Evans, vanished in 1979 at the age of 24, and, like at least 15 others, was later established to have been abducted, murdered and secretly buried by the IRA.

Mrs Evans, who was known for her strong faith, was finally able to provide a Christian burial for her son when his body was found in bogland in Co Louth in 2010.

The entire community will hope, as she would have prayed, that the enduring agony of the families of the last three missing victims also comes to an end through the discovery of the remains of their loved ones.
