Ryan Burnett a worthy champion

World bantamweight champion Ryan Burnett produced a brilliant display to emerge victorious in Ireland's first ever world title unification fight in Belfast at the weekend.

Burnett (25), from the north of the city, has had to deal with major injury and financial setbacks before his career was able to reach its present heights.

A neurologist recommended only three years ago that he should quit the ring, while he and his father suffered a period of homelessness as he tried to recover and were at at one stage sleeping in a car.

However, Burnett had the determination to deal with one crisis after another and produced a compelling performance to retain his unbeaten record at the SSE Arena on Saturday night

He is an outstanding ambassador for his sport and he is fully capable of further notable achievements in the coming years.
