Justice needed for Michaela McAreavey

There will be enormous sympathy for the family of Michaela McAreavey, who travelled back to the scene of her 2011 murder in Mauritius to make an emotional appeal for public help in the stalled investigation.

Widower John McAreavey even offered a reward of 2m Mauritian rupees, the equivalent of £44,000, for information which would finally allow a breakthrough to take place in the tragic and unresolved case.

Mr McAreavey was fully entitled to feel bitterly frustrated about a process which has failed to obtain any convictions after the cruel killing of her 27-year-old wife, who was found strangled in a luxury resort hotel on their honeymoon.

The authorities in Mauritius have offered further assurances about their commitment to the search for justice and, regardless of how long it takes, they need to honour their promises.
