Trump needs fair immigration plan

It will be widely noted that President Donald Trump, who is attempting to significantly tighten US immigration policies, had four grandparents and a mother who were born in Europe.

Irish American groups are particularly concerned about the implications of his plans, and yesterday issued new specific advisory messages to the people they represent.

It would be grossly unfair if an undocumented US resident, who had made an otherwise strongly positive contribution to the community, found themselves deported over a relatively minor motoring infringement.

Mr Trump should be prepared to look at his own family background and ensure that hard-working and respected individuals who set out to make a new life in America are treated with basic fairness.
