We have far too many provocative emlems on public display

It should be generally agreed that, across our society, we have far too many provocative and unauthorised emblems on public display in both unionist and nationalist districts.

The civic improvement scheme which resulted in the removal of a Union flag which was kept in place for decades in what should have been a neutral environment on a busy roundabout in the centre of Magherafelt, Co Derry, was a small step in the right direction last October.

Unfortunately, as we report today, it has now been reappeared at the head of a 20-foot pole erected under cover of darkness by individuals who had no concern for either the planning process or health and safety guidelines.

If regulations are flouted in this way, it is essential that a firm and appropriate official response is forthcoming without delay.
