Continuing attacks worrying

TOO many cities around the world suffered terribly in violent attacks in 2016. While it is to be hoped that such atrocities will cease in this new year, the murder of 39 people in a Turkish nightclub as the old year was running out does not bode well.

Attacks in Nice and in Berlin just a few weeks ago demonstrated not only just how callous the perpetrators are but also how difficult a job the security services face in stopping them.

While at least one gunman was involved in this latest outrage in Istanbul, in Nice and Berlin large lorries were used to mow down and kill large numbers of people gathered to enjoy themselves.

There must be tens of thousands of such vehicles in use every single day of the week. To protect against them being used as a weapon of mass murder is a daunting prospect.
