Anti-social behaviour on public transport is unacceptable

Figures showing an increase in assaults and anti-social behaviour on our rail services must be regarded as a matter of serious concern.

Northern Ireland Railways last year recorded a total of 158 verbal or physical assaults and reports of anti-social or inappropriate behaviour.

Bus services also experienced a rise in incidents with a sharp increase in the number of physical assaults against staff and passengers.

It is completely unacceptable that anyone should be subjected to any form of abuse while using our public transport system.

Questions have been asked about the level of security available, particularly at train stations.

Translink has insisted it has a zero tolerance approach to antisocial behaviour and it is right that the perpetrators are pursued and prosecuted.

But with the number of incidents on the rise, there is a strong case for the number of security personnel to be reviewed to improve the safety of passengers and staff.
