Alarm over Seamus Gormley case

The case of Seamus Gormley, an 86-year-old dementia sufferer who was left tied to a chair with a belt in his Co Tyrone care home, was appalling in every respect.

Mr Gormley's relatives were only told of his ordeal, which they believe lasted for up to two hours, when they found bruises on his arms three days after the incident last year.

The Omagh residential complex has subsequently closed, with a member of staff last month convicted of assault and ill treatment.

However, the Gormley family remains unhappy over the response of the authorities, and it is essential that the treatment received by vulnerable senior citizens is closely monitored at all times with fully accountable structures kept in place.
