Another workplace death underlines importance of safety

There is a deep sense of shock and sadness following the death of 33-year-old Jonathan Peden in an accident at his place of work, in Lurgan, Co Armagh on Thursday.

His tragic death is an incalculable loss to his family, in particular his wife Roisin, whom he married only four weeks ago. To go from immense joy to profound grief in such a short time is absolutely devastating.

Mr Peden is the latest victim of a workplace accident in Northern Ireland. Only last month, Co Tyrone father of two Stevie McTeague died after becoming trapped under machinery.

Figures from the Health and Safety Executive show there was a sharp increase in the number of people dying at work in 2014/15 and this has been a terrible year so far.

We do not yet know the circumstances of Mr Peden's death but any fatal accident underlines the overwhelming importance of safety in the workplace.
