Death of Northern Ireland fan Darren Rodgers is a dreadful tragedy

The death of football fan Darren Rodgers while supporting the Northern Ireland team in Nice is a terrible tragedy which has caused a deep sense of shock.

The 24-year-old from Ballymena, Co Antrim, fell 26ft over a promenade barrier and through a restaurant roof at around 2am yesterday.

This is the most heartbreaking news for his family, who have been left devastated by the sudden loss of a young man who, like thousands of others, had travelled to France full of excitement and hoping to be part of an enjoyable and memorable occasion.

His death will cast a shadow over Northern Ireland fans who have been praised for their exemplary behaviour during their time in Nice.

The sympathy of the supporters and the wider community will be with the Rodgers family at this sad time.
