Demolition of Ardoyne peace wall a positive move

Given the recent history of discord at the Ardoyne interface over the parading issue, the dismantling of a large peace wall in the area will be viewed as a hugely positive development.

As recently as the end of last year, a security gate in the wall was closed for the first time in 20 years after a series on attacks on houses.

Despite this, residents have agreed to the removal of the wall in a move which has been described as a ``brave and bold step.''

Certainly, it is enormously encouraging to see one of these oppressive and divisive structures coming down.

The now demolished peace wall was first built in the mid-1980s and will be replaced with railings.

Hopefully this commendable initiative will encourage the removal of more barriers that exist between the communities in other parts of Belfast.
