Paul O'Connell was a giant of his game

Irish sport has produced many towering figures down the years but by any standards Paul O'Connell deserves to be regarded as an outstanding performer and an inspirational captain.

He led the Irish rugby team to the 2014 and 2015 Six Nation titles, was at the heart of the historic Grand Slam triumph of 2009 and throughout his 108 caps reflected the highest international standards in his chosen code.

It is sad that a long-term injury yesterday forced his final retirement from the game just as he was due to set out on the final chapter of his career through a transfer to the French side Toulon.

However, at the age of 36, he has a unique set of memories and medals and departs with the gratitude of sports fans in all parts of Ireland and indeed around the world.
