Profound sadness as Lisa Dorrian's mother dies

It is desperately sad that the mother of Lisa Dorrian has died without finding out what happened to her daughter or having her body returned and given a Christian burial.

Pat Dorrian's death on Monday, aged just 59, is yet another terrible blow to her family, who have been through so much.

Mrs Dorrian and her husband John had spent the past decade trying to find the remains of their 25-year-old daughter, who went missing after a party at a caravan site in Ballyhalbert, Co Down on February 28, 2005.

On the tenth anniversary of that fateful night, Mrs Dorrian told how the family had struggled every day since her daughter's disappearance and challenged those responsible to ``listen and watch and see the pain on our faces.''

Members of the Loyalist Volunteer Force are suspected of involvement in her murder and disappearance but despite a number of arrests and more than 275 searches, no one has been brought to justice for this despicable crime.

Earlier this year, a convicted murderer, Jimmy Seales, told Sunday Life the hairdresser had been killed by drug dealers and her body sealed in a container which was buried in an illegal landfill site at Ballygowan.

However, it is not known if this information led to further police action.

While Lisa Dorrian's murder does not come under the remit of the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims Remains, her name is listed on the official website of the Disappeared along with an appeal from her parents for information about their daughter.

Indeed, it is clear just how much Mrs Dorrian had suffered over the years but she never gave up the campaign to find out what had happened to her child.

In a poignant statement on the Disappeared website, Lisa's parents wrote: ``They say that time is a great healer, but for us it just gets worse.''

All the families of the Disappeared have endured an unimaginably cruel ordeal, not knowing the fate or whereabouts of their loved one but waiting and hoping for the news of a breakthrough.

Thankfully, the wait is over for many but the agony goes on for several families, including the Dorrians.

If her killers had any conscience whatsoever, they should now come forward and disclose where this young woman has been buried.

Equally, anyone with information about this dreadful crime should tell the police and allow this family to finally lay Lisa to rest.
