Fr Reynolds was a force for progress
Father Gerry Reynolds, who died yesterday after a short illness, made an outstanding contribution to the search for peace and reconciliation in Ireland and was a major force for progress throughout his long ministry.
He had a particularly strong commitment to ecumenism, and always extended the hand of friendship and understanding to like-minded figures within the Church of Ireland, Presbyterian and Methodist Churches.
His work as a Redemptorist priest at Clonard Monastery in west Belfast, where he was based for over three decades, enabled his blend of wisdom and common sense to have a positive impact on lives across the city and beyond.
Father Reynolds had a rare ability to establish a bond of human trust, even in the most difficult of circumstances, and his role in changing our society for the better was commendable in every respect.
