Poppy protest is inappropriate

The Royal British Legion deserves credit for disassociating itself from a loyalist picket directed against a north Belfast store which has decided to support a cancer charity rather than the annual poppy appeal.

In a firm intervention, a senior official said that the demonstration outside a branch of Lidl on the Shore Road was inappropriate and indicated a misunderstanding of what the poppy actually represented.

The protestors should accept that their actions in a mixed area are counterproductive and will do nothing to further the aims of the legion's annual appeal.
