Another cynical display at Stormont

It is widely expected that the DUP MLA Michelle McIlveen, who was yesterday nominated as the new minister for regional development, will resign her post almost immediately in line with her party’s `no business as usual’ policy.

While the manoeuvre was technically within the rules at Stormont, it will be regarded by almost everyone outside the DUP as an entirely cynical development which summed up why the reputation of our devolved institutions has crumbled over recent months.

The sooner that some progress can be made in the inter-party talks, allowing at least some degree of credibility to return to the power-sharing administration, the better.
