A1 upgrade is urgently required

As yet another appalling accident has demonstrated, the busy A1 dual carriageway between Hillsborough and Newry is among the most dangerous roads in Ireland.

It was confirmed yesterday that the three young men who died in a collision near Banbridge on Sunday night were all highly regarded students at Queen’s University in Belfast.

The sheer volume of traffic passing between Belfast and Dublin means that a general upgrading of the A1, with the addition of a number of flyovers and underpasses, must be regarded as a particularly urgent priority.
