Families face nursery dilemma

The former All Ireland winning footballer Steven McDonnell may be a household name in his native Co Armagh but he is facing the same problem as many other parents in a range of areas.

As we reported yesterday, Mr McDonnell has discovered that, due to a high demand for places, his three year old son, Cahir, cannot attend the same nursery school outside Newry as his three other children.

It seems particularly unfortunate that a family with a long-standing and close relationship with an individual school should be left facing a dilemma of this kind.

The onus must be on the educational authorities to maintain criteria which facilitate a fair and reasonable outcome when such difficult decisions arise.
