Alarm over Ardnabannon closure

There will be widespread regret over the closure of the long-established and well-regarded outdoor learning centre at Ardnabannon, outside Castlewellan, in Co Down.

The 100-bed complex has provided a range of activities for young people, including orienteering, canoeing, archery and hillwalking, since it opened its doors 50 years ago.

Officials from the Education Authority said they intended to follow a new approach which would involve instructors providing services within schools and at three other day centres in Armagh, Bangor and Ballycastle.

However, it is clear from the anger expressed by elected representatives and community leaders that Ardnabannon played an important role at many different levels and it must be hoped that some form of survival plan for the facility can still emerge.
