Outrage over racist attacks

There will be enormous sympathy for the Filipino family who have had to endure an upsurge in a despicable series of racist attacks on the north Belfast house where they have lived for the last 11 years.

Cleo and Memet Enriquez, together with their 15-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son, have seen their home pelted with bricks, fireworks and eggs by thugs who disappear under cover of darkness.

They have welcomed the support of their neighbours, and say they do not wish to leave, but, as we reported yesterday, seven outrageous incidents in the last four weeks have placed them under enormous strain.

Hate crimes of this kind demean us all and, despite all the difficulties faced by police, deserve to be resolved by the prosecution of the perpetrators rather than effectively forcing the victims to move on.
