Road safety move welcome

THERE will be considerable relief that work has finally begun on the reinstatement of safety measures on a busy road close to Queen's University Belfast where a Tyrone student was fatally injured in an accident last October.

The family of Enda Dolan (18) from Omagh, who was struck by a van as he walked to his accommodation in the nearby halls of residence, previously expressed concerns about the circumstances surrounding the removal of the Malone Road crash barrier weeks earlier.

They pointed out that the barrier had been in place since two other young students died at almost exactly the same spot in 1977, and put forward a dignified and effective case for its replacement.

It was always essential that appropriate levels of protection should be provided for the large numbers of pedestrians in the district and the decision by the authorities, while belated, deserves to be welcomed.
