Answers needed over waste dump

THE disclosure in recently released state papers that radioactive waste was secretly dumped in Derry and north Belfast more than 30 years ago has caused some concern.

Derry councillors are due to hold a special meeting tomorrow over the disposal of radioactive iodine in Culmore landfill site between 1977 and 1983, while environment minister Mark H Durkan has ordered a report on the matter.

Hopefully, expert advice can be quickly provided on the possible health implications but people are entitled to ask why it was believed necessary to withhold this information from the public.
