What does America think about Melania Trump becoming the new First Lady?

Donald Trump has been elected the 45th president of the United States, and with every new president comes a First Lady.

Trump will be sworn in on the steps of the Capitol on January 20, 2017 – and after he does so, his wife, Melania Trump, will adopt the official title of First Lady.

But Melania is no Michelle Obama, we hear you cry. No she’s not, and if she’s going to reap even a smidgen of the love Americans had for the current FLOTUS, she’s got a lot of work on her hands.

While Michelle attended both Princeton University and Harvard Law School, later becoming a lawyer where she met Barack, Melania boasts a less academically impressive past.

Michelle has launched a number of programmes aimed at helping American veterans, young women and disadvantaged adults (among others), all while rapping Missy Elliott with James Corden during an episode of Carpool Karoake and busting moves to Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk at the 137th annual White House Easter Egg Roll.

So what’s there to know about Melania?

Melania was born in Slovenia and launched a modelling career at 16, signing to her first modelling agency in Milan at 18. Since, she’s graced the covers of a number of high-end magazines, including the likes of Vogue, Harpers’s Bazaar and British GQ.

After gaining a degree in design and architecture, Melania settled in New York in 1996 where she’s apparently thrived due to her “passion for the arts, architecture, design, fashion and beauty”. She’s also designed her own jewellery collection called Melania Timepieces & Jewelry, don’t you know, and showcases it on QVC.

Melania met her husband-to-be at a New York Fashion Week party in 1998. At the time Trump had supposedly just split from his second wife Marla Maples, and was actually on a date with another woman. Nevertheless, he managed to slide his number Melania’s way and the rest, they say, is history.

Melania’s life over the past two decades hasn’t been all glitz and glamour though, as she has done her fair share for worldly causes too. According to her official Facebook page, Melania – who speaks five languages – was made a goodwill ambassador for the American Red Cross, which she served as for four years.

She also claims to have been the chairwoman for the American Heart Association, helping to raise $1.7 million towards research in 2010.

While some people may have their reservations about Melania, it’s safe to say not everyone harbours doubt – some Americans still have hope.

Still, there’s two months or so before the Obamas move out of the White House and the Trumps take their place, making Melania the official new First Lady for the next four years.
