A BOMB has exploded on a passenger train in south-western Pakistan, killing at least three people and injuring 10 others, a railway official said.

Tufail Ahmad said the blast happened near the village of Mach in Baluchistan province on Friday.

He said the train was heading to the garrison city of Rawalpindi from Quetta, the provincial capital.

Mr Ahmad said the casualties were taken to nearby hospitals and that some of the wounded passengers were listed as being in a critical condition.

No-one has claimed responsibility for the bombing, but separatist groups in the province have claimed similar attacks in the past.

For more than a decade, Baluchistan has been the scene of a low-intensity insurgency by ethnic Baluch separatists who want autonomy or outright independence.

The Pakistan government said it is trying to improve the welfare of people in the province and bring the separatists in to mainstream politics.

Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique denounced the bombing as "an act of terrorism" and said authorities were still trying to determine how the device was planted on the train.

Prime minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the attack and ordered authorities to find and arrest those behind it.

In a statement, he also told health officials to provide best medical care to the injured passengers.
