THREE women have been arrested by police investigating a possible car bomb plot in central Paris.

French interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve said yesterday it was likely the women had been planning an "imminent" attack. They were arrested in connection with a car containing significant quantities of diesel and six gas canisters found near Notre Dame Cathedral last week.

"These three women aged 39, 23 and 19 had been radicalised, were fanatics and were in all likelihood preparing an imminent, violent act," Mr Cazeneuve said.

A police officer was injured after he was stabbed by one of the women during the arrests in Boussy Saint Antoine, south-east of Paris.

A total of seven people have now been arrested over the possible car bomb plot.

Officials said a 27-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were detained south of Paris on Wednesday. A second couple, a 34-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, were detained on Tuesday.
