A 19-YEAR-OLD Irish tourist drowned in the swimming pool of a Spanish apartment complex only hours after checking into the resort.

The man was named as Greg Long from Rylane in Co Cork.

He was staying with a large group of family and friends in Torremolinos, Costa del Sol, when the tragedy happened on Wednesday evening.

He is thought to have fallen into the pool of the Apartmentos Buensol tourist complex, which is a short walk from La Carihuela Beach at the

popular resort.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin confirmed it was providing consular assistance to the family.

"We are currently assisting the family following the death of an Irish citizen in Spain," she said.

"We are unable to release any further details at this time."

Emergency services were alerted at 7pmon Wednesday after a hotel worker reportedly pulled the tourist out of the water, with the help of a receptionist, after diving in to rescue him.

Paramedics tried unsuccessfully to revive Mr Long when they reached the scene.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death but sources said everything was pointing to a tragic accident in which

the holidaymaker fell into the deep end of the swimming pool and was unable to pull himself out.

The young man had flown to Spain with a group of around 15 people, believed to include his parents as well as other relatives and friends.

A post-mortem was due to take place at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Malaga.
