On This Day in 1919: Coffin moan

AN incident which created no little excitement in Clarendon Street Church, Dublin yesterday.

Two tailoresses, employed at Switzer’s, after attending Mass in the church, informed the Carmelite community that during the service they heard moans proceeding from a coffin which lay in the mortuary.

The Superior contacted the police and the relatives of the deceased. Meanwhile, a large number of people, having heard the remarkable story, collected in anticipation of having a look at the person who was about to be saved from being buried alive.

The services of a carpenter were requisitioned and, in the presence of the police and friends, reverently removed the lid to find that the man lay exactly in the same position in which he had been placed in the coffin, quite dead.
