RORY McIlroy spoke out last night to deny that he and Caroline Wozniacki are engaged after the 22-year-old Danish tennis player was spotted sporting a large diamond ring on her left hand.
There was a frenzy of speculation after the Co Down golfing sensation's girlfriend was pictured in Australia wearing a square-cut jewel with a sapphire centre and diamond surround.
Wozniacki was said to have made no attempt to hide the huge sparkler as she arrived for an afternoon practice session at the Queensland Tennis Centre ahead of competing in the Brisbane International, which begins tomorrow.
Media reports claim she was then seen removing the ring - similar to that received by Kate Middleton from Prince William - before she took to the court for her practice.
She has previously been forced to deny reports that she and McIlroy (23) had become engaged after claims that golf's world number one had popped the question.
Yesterday Wozniacki was also seen wearing a diamond and sapphire band on the same finger, which fuelled speculation that the pair had secretly wed.
The story made headlines around the world yesterday but as the rumour mill went into overdrive McIlroy's representative issued a statement denying the reports.
The statement said that "on behalf of Rory McIlroy, I would like to confirm that he has NOT become engaged to Caroline Wozniacki as was originally reported in Australian press".
"Rory is in Australia to support Caroline before he heads in January to Abu Dhabi," it read.
A spokesperson for Wozniacki also dismissed the speculation.
The couple have been reportedly dating from July last year when a photograph of them enjoying a meal together emerged.
They are reported to have met at the world heavyweight title fight between Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye in Germany earlier that month.
They got together after McIlroy split from long-term girlfriend Holly Sweeney and recently featured in Forbes magazine’s influential list of
