AN 18-year-old male has drowned while swimming in the sea at the island of Árainn Mhór off the Co Donegal coast.

The incident occurred at a beach at Leadbh Gharbh shortly after 2pm on Monday.

It is understood the teen, who is believed to attend a secondary school on the island, was swimming with a friend when he got into difficulty.

A spokesperson for the RNLI said the Lifeboat was launched from its station on the island after being tasked by the Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard helicopter from Sligo also arrived at the scene.

A Garda spokesperson said: "A man, aged in his late teens, was removed from water after he had gotten into difficulty.

"He received treatment from medics at the scene, but was later pronounced dead."

The spokesperson added that a post-mortem will take place at a later date at Letterkenny University Hospita.
