FORMER RTÉ sports commentator Jim Sherwin has died, aged 81.

The Co Wicklow-born broadcaster was a familiar face and voice to many Irish sports fans having commentated across many sports, from rugby to tennis and the Olympic Games.

His career as a rugby commentator spanned from 1970 -2003, while over more than two decades he also contributed to RTÉ's coverage of major tennis tournaments, including Wimbledon and the French Open.

Mr Sherwin's career at the Olympic Games was equally distinguished and saw him serve as RTÉ’s main commentator for eight Olympics, beginning with Munich in 1972 and concluding at the 2004 games in Athens.

The IRFU paid tribute to the man it described as the 'Voice of Rugby’.

“Everyone at Irish Rugby is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of rugby commentator Jim Sherwin,” a statement published on social media said.

“The ‘Voice of Rugby’ for generations, Jim was an iconic part of so many of our great days. May he Rest In Peace.”

He is survived by his wife Anne and four children, James, Ian, Cliona and John, along with 11 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced today.
