The elderly mother of RTÉ GAA presenter Marty Morrissey has died in a road accident.

Peggy Morrissey, who was in her 90s, was in a single vehicle crash in the early hours of yesterday in Co Clare.

She was driving and was the only occupant of the car, it was reported last night.

The accident in the Miltown Malbay area at 12.30am was before Storm Barra hit the Westerly county. Clare's red weather alert began at 4pm yesterday.

Mrs Morrissey was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was taken to Limerick University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Gardaí at Kilrush station have issued an appeal for anyone with information to contact them.

Mr Morrissey said in a recent interview of his mother: “Her motto has always been not to get a big head and keep your feet on the ground."

The 63-year-old is one of RTÉ most recognisable sports presenters. He has worked for the national broadcaster for 27 years and specialises in GAA coverage.

In 2018 he survived for five weeks on RTE's Dancing with the Stars.
