A murder investigation has been launched in Georgia following the discovery of a Co Mayo man's body.

Thomas Kennedy (28) was found in the Mtkvari River in the city of Gori on Saturday.

The Shida Kartli Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said four people have been charged with premeditated murder, committed in group under aggravated circumstances.

A fifth person has been charged with non-reporting of the "especially grave" crime.

It was reported Mr Kennedy was socialising with a group of Georgian nationals when a row broke out.

Mr Kennedy's family have set up a GoFundMe page to help repatriate his remains back home from the country bordering the Black Sea.

On the page, it said "our beautiful Tom" had died "brutally and tragically".

"We are absolutely devastated there are no words, life will never be the same again without our beautiful talented boy," they said.

"It is currently very difficult to repatriate Tom home due to the Covid-19 restrictions, so we are setting up this GoFundMe Page to raise funds to bring Tom home as soon as possible, this is costly, and with the help of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, we will get him to his beloved home of Co Mayo".
