GARDAI have launched an investigation after an All-Ireland football medal belonging to Meath great Martin O'Connell was stolen during a burglary at a house in his home county.

The medal was taken on Tuesday evening from the house in Staholmog.

The prized medal was presented to Mr O'Connell after Meath's All-Ireland win over Cork in 1987.

A three time All-Ireland winner, Mr O'Connell also won six Leinster titles, three national league medals and picked up four all star awards during a glittering career.

An antique ring, a golden jubilee commemoration medal and cash were also taken by the thieves.

The items stolen are said to have been of huge sentimental value to the family.

It is reported the house was broken into sometime between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on Tuesday.

The elderly occupants were there at the time but were unaware of the burglary.

Two other houses were also broken into in the area around the same time, however nothing was stolen.

Gardai say no arrests have been made.
