Tayto Park has announced it will not reopen later this month - just hours after the popular attraction said it would open its doors on June 18.

The Co Meath park said this morning it would reopen with strict limits on the number of people allowed entry.

The park's owners said this afternoon they believed they were entitled to open "in line with all communications from all regulatory authorities over the past few days".

"However, on reviewing statutory regulations that were published late yesterday evening (June 8), is with regret that Tayto Park will have to remain closed until regulations permit us to reopen," they said.

Under phase two of the Dublin government’s plan to ease coronavirus lockdown restrictions, people are only allowed to travel within their county or up to 20km from their home, meaning that many people would not have been able to visit the park if it had reopened.

The park said its website had been overwhelmed by the demand for tickets when they went on sale at 1pm.

Anyone who bought tickets will get their money back.

Ray Coyle of Tayto Park said: "We’re terribly sorry, particularly given the huge amount of excitement and support we received this morning from everyone. Myself and the entire team at Tayto Park look forward to welcoming everyone when regulations allow".
