The coronavirus death toll in the Republic of Ireland has risen by nine to 1,678, the National Public Health Emergency Team has announced.

Community transmission accounts for 39 per cent of those for whom transmission status is known, with close contact accounting for 59 per cent and travel abroad 2 per cent.

Meanwhile, one further person has died after contracting coronavirus in Northern Ireland, bringing the total number of deaths here to 537.

The Department of Health said the death occurred in the last 24 hours and that a further 14 people have tested positive for the virus, bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the north to 4,776.
