A six-year-old boy has died after being found in a stream in Co Mayo.

The child, who lived with his family at Rath Glas, Rehins Fort in Ballina, was reported missing from his home on Sunday.

Gardaí along with local people began a search along the banks of the River Moy, which runs to the rear of the estate in which the boy lived.

He was later found in a stream leading to the river and removed by gardaí before being given CPR until an ambulance crew arrived.

It is believed paramedics and emergency staff worked to save the child's life but he was pronounced dead after being taken to Mayo University Hospital.

The boy belonged to a business family in Ballina and the tragedy is said to have shocked the community.
