VOTING in the Tipperary constituency in the Republic's general election will go ahead on Saturday.

It had initially been thought polling would in the five-seat constituency would be postponed following the death of independent candidate Marese Skehan.

Ms Skehan, who was in her sixties, was found dead at her home in Thurles on Monday morning.

The decision to proceed on Saturday follows extensive legal consultation by the office of the Attorney General.

The office is reported to have examined legal arguments that claimed a delay to the Tipperary vote could be unconstitutional, because the constitution states an election has to be held within 30 days of the dissolution of the Dáil.
